Rosa’s roses: Reduced vowels in American English
نویسندگان
چکیده
Beginning phonetics students are taught that American English has two contrasting reduced vowels, transcribed as [ ́] and [È], illustrated by the unstressed vowels in the minimal pair Rosa’s vs. roses. However little seems to be known about the precise nature or distribution of these vowels. This study explores these questions through acoustic analysis of reduced vowels in the speech of twelve American English speakers. The results show that there is a fundamental distinction between the mid central [ ́] vowel that can occur in unstressed word-final position (e.g. in Rosa), and high reduced vowels that occur in most other unstressed positions, and might be transcribed as [È]. The contrast between pairs like Rosa’s and roses derives from this difference because the word-final [ ́] is preserved when an inflectional suffix is added, so the schwa of Rosa’s is similar to the final vowel of Rosa, whereas the unstressed vowel of roses is the high [È] reduced vowel quality found elsewhere. So the standard transcription of the reduced vowel contrast is justified, but the widespread use of [ ́] to transcribe word-internal reduced vowels is misleading – mid reduced vowels are generally only found in stem-final position.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملAn acoustic study of speech rhythm in taiwan English
American English and Taiwan English have been found to exhibit different rhythmic patterns. American English is often described as a stress-timed language, while it has been suggested that Taiwan English is a syllable-timed language. This paper addresses the differences between these two varieties of English through an acoustic study. In particular the F1/F2 formant space is investigated. The r...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملProducing American English vowels during vocal tract growth: a perceptual categorization study of synthesized vowels.
PURPOSE To consider interactions of vocal tract change with growth and perceived output patterns across development, the influence of nonuniform vocal tract growth on the ability to reach acoustic-perceptual targets for English vowels was studied. METHOD Thirty-seven American English speakers participated in a perceptual categorization experiment. For the experiment, an articulatory-to-acoust...

BACKGROUND/AIMS This study examined the spectral characteristics of American English vowels in dysarthria associated with cerebral palsy (CP), and investigated the relationship between a speaker's overall speech intelligibility and vowel contrast. METHODS The data were collected from 12 American English native speakers (9 speakers with a diagnosis of CP and 3 controls). Primary measures were ...
